The Season of Giving

<empty 12/9/2008

ORANGE = EGNARO

The sound is deafening. In the post-Thanksgiving haze of sleeping babies and whisperng adults tip-toeing on sock feet, the plastic-on-plastic rumbling of the Boggle game sounds like a string of exploding M-80s, inside of a metal trash can, attached to a megaphone system, mounted on top of a steamroller flattening a 10-foot-thick tower of bubble-wrap.

Jennifer has resorted to shaking it under the table, holding it under a pillow, in an attempt to muffle the sound. How many ways can you spell “hilarious?” Everyone imagines spelling “fructiferous” (fruit-bearing), “eudemonia”(happiness), and “supercalifragilisticexpialidocius” but the truth is we’re mostly scoring words like “see,” “hat,” “hats,” and “hatsee.” In a late round gamble I proudly announce “quj” (according to Sir Isaac Newton, “quj” was the sound the apple made when it hit him on the head), but eight-year-old Fiona calls my bluff and assesses negative 400 points as a penalty. She then awards my sister Lauren 500 points for being wavy-haired (cymotrichous), and 10,000 points for Quincy the dog because he enjoys being petted. Meanwhile, her twin sister Simone takes us all to school with a correct spelling of “sleighride.” Looks like one thing Santa won’t need to bring this year is a dictionary.

As we get deeper into winter, the most important letter of the alphabet at FruitGuys is C: C for Citrus, and the Vitamin it Contains. As the winter gets colder, citrus on trees produce high quantities of sugar that act as a natural anti-freeze for their cells. The trick is to harvest at the peak of sugar, and coldness, without the cells freezing and drying out inside. Next week on the West Coast we’ll have award-winning Organic Navels from Jack and Betty Jo Hildebrand at Pleasant Valley Ranch in Springville, CA. One thing to remember in times of transition is that as more amazing citrus and winter bounty comes on line, Fall fruits like fresh-picked apples will naturally start to wane. But that hasn’t stopped Beatific (blissful) Benn from finding a late-season gem for our East Coast crates! The wee-tiny Lady Apple is a special winter dessert apple that can be traced back to ancient Rome. It’s not a crabapple, and it is delicious—sweet with a nutty finish. Try the Lady this week, and keep an eye out for the peel-able, section-able, delectable citrus fruits coming up and we promise your inner Mick Jagger all the “sat-is-faction” you dare to try for.

Enjoy and be Fruitful!

Fruit Forwarding a Hit!

FruitGuys clients love their weekly fruit but many of you were generous enough to forward that fruit to people in need during the Thanksgiving holiday when your offices were closed or minimally staffed. Our Donate-A-Crate Program shipped 71 FruitCrates over to San Francisco’s Family House, Riley Center, City Harvest in New York City, and the Greater Chicago Food Bank.

FruitGuys' Erik Muller and his four-year-old son Niko brought the first load of FruitCrates to Family House. Family House provides a home away from home for low-income children and their families who come to San Francisco for treatment of serious illnesses such as cancer. Their two locations house about 30 families and provide private living space as well as community support. The donated fruit will provide nutritious snacks for these families until the end of January.

“My wife and I piled the kids into their car seats and propped up the banana suit in the front co-pilot seat,” recounted Erik. “We met Kent (Smith), the program director, who couldn’t stop smiling at the banana suit, which I had now put on, and thanking us for bringing fresh nutritional food.” Erik said the kids currently staying at the House ranged in age from newborns to teenagers. “We went to each kitchen meeting the families, talking about what to do to stay strong, and telling fruit jokes. We got both smiles and looks of disbelief.”

The Riley Center, another FruitCrate recipient, provides shelter and services for abused women with children. Fruit was distributed at both their emergency shelter and a transitional home where the pantry is now stocked for mothers and their families.

East Coast clients donated their crates to City Harvest in New York City, a multi-program agency that calls itself a “food rescue program.”  Cecelia at the Conference of State Bank Supervisors in Washington DC sent their fruit to City Harvest. “I went on their website and they had some good programs so we picked them.” She said “we’ll definitely do it again for the Christmas holiday”.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository, which supplies food through 600 different pantries and soup kitchens to 500,000 people, one third of them children, stocked the donated fruit on the shelves of their Mini-Mart, a store-like food pantry. “The quality of the fruit was outstanding,” said Tom Hayes of the Food Resources Directory. “We're glad to have it.”

FruitGuys customers are also gathering resources for their communities in other ways. Besides donating their holiday week fruit, employees at Sitzman Morris, an insurance brokerage in Oakland, CA are having an “Adopt-A-Family” program. Many customers are participating in toy, coat or food drives. John Curry of the San Francisco Food Bank said their clients value the fresh fruit because “it provides a sense of normalcy, it’s something that they would pick up if they went to the grocery store themselves.”

If your office is closed or minimally staffed over the Christmas and New Year’s week holidays (or any other time of year), you can forward your fruit through our Donate-A-Crate Program. Just contact FruitGuys customer service (1-877-FRUIT-ME) or info@fruitguys.com to donate - or postpone - your holiday week deliveries. And remember that your donation is tax deductible.

Wellness: Well-Spoken and Widely-Used

healthcaseWe at The FruitGuys spend a lot of time thinking about Wellness. Every day we ask ourselves how we can help our clients make healthier workplaces. For starters, we bring your office farm-fresh produce and provide nutrition information and everything you need to start an office walking club. But The FruitGuys are committed to delivering Wellness outside your office as well. To your families, to your communities, anywhere you go and anywhere you want it. If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, we offer take-home Wellness of organic fruits and veggies via our HealthCase program (recipes included).

Farm Steward We also offer nationwide long-distance Wellness to your kids via our DormSnack fruit delivery program for college students. We give back Wellness to our farmer friends and growers via The FruitGuys Farm Steward Program, and to our communities with your charitable fruit box donations via our Donate-Your-Crate Program and by sponsoring young entrepreneurs at San Francisco's Somethin' Fresh. We also donate over 80,000 pounds of produce annually to charitable organizations nationwide and strive to achieve sustainable packaging and business practices at all our facilities.

But what is Wellness, exactly? We know it can be a potentially nebulous term. At The FruitGuys, we like the definition supplied by our friends at The UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, the award-winning fitness and nutrition newsletter that we provide our clients:

"Wellness is much more than simply the absence of sickness. It is optimal physical, mental, and emotional well being, a preventive way of living that reduces—sometimes even eliminates—the need for remedies. Wellness emphasizes personal responsibility for making the life-style choices and self-care decisions that will improve the quality of your life […] such preventive measures as eating a healthy diet, making exercise an enjoyable part of your life […] The premise of wellness is that you can live a long, healthy, and active life. All you need is the desire to do so—and the right information on which to base your actions."

walking programA good Worksite Wellness program can assist your employees with weight reduction, improved physical fitness, increased stamina, lower levels of stress, and increased well-being, self-image, and self-esteem. As an employer, your company can benefit from a good Worksite Wellness program with enhanced recruitment and retention of quality employees, reduced healthcare costs, decreased rates of illness and injuries, reduced employee absenteeism, improved employee relations and morale, and improved productivity.

At The FruitGuys, we have a saying: Healthy Employees make Wealthy Companies, and we live by it. A US Department of Health and Human Services report from 2002 found that worksites with physical activity programs reduced healthcare costs in levels up to 55 percent, reduced short-term sick leave up to 32 percent, and increased productivity as much as 52 percent.

The FruitGuys is more than just fruit delivery: we're serious about Wellness; about being well ourselves; about spreading wellness in our communities; and most of all, about bringing Wellness opportunities to you. Your company is our partner in Wellness.
