ORANGE = EGNARO
Posted on December 08, 2008
The sound is deafening. In the post-Thanksgiving haze of sleeping babies and whispering adults tip-toeing on sock feet, the plastic-on-plastic rumbling of the Boggle game sounds like a string of exploding M-80s, inside of a metal trash can, attached to a megaphone system, mounted on top of a steamroller flattening a 10-foot-thick tower of bubble-wrap.
As we get deeper into winter, the most important letter of the alphabet at FruitGuys is C: C for Citrus, and the Vitamin it Contains. As the winter gets colder, citrus on trees produce high quantities of sugar that act as a natural anti-freeze for their cells. The trick is to harvest at the peak of sugar, and coldness, without the cells freezing and drying out inside. Next week on the West coast we'll have award-winning Organic Navels from Jack and Betty Jo Hildebrand at Pleasant Valley Ranch in Springville, CA. One thing to remember in times of transition is that as more amazing citrus and winter bounty comes on line, Fall fruits like fresh-picked apples will naturally start to wane. But that hasn't stopped Beatific (blissful) Benn from finding a late-season gem for our East Coast crates! The wee-tiny Lady Apple is a special winter dessert apple that can be traced back to ancient Rome. It's not a crabapple, and it is delicious-sweet with a nutty finish. Try the Lady this week, and keep an eye out for the peel-able, section-able, delectable citrus fruits coming up and we promise your inner Mick Jagger all the "sat-is-faction" you dare to try for.
Enjoy and be fruitful!
