Navel Gazing
Posted on December 15, 2008I won't ever forget my first trip on California Highway 190. And not just because it was the worst case of carsickness I have ever experienced in my life. Past Coffee Canyon, Highway 190 East winds, coils, and corkscrews through a 30-mile series of consecutive hairpin turns deep into the southern heart of the Sierra Nevada range, carving a passage to one of the most strikingly gorgeous climbing destinations in the world - The Needles. The granite is steep and clean, the routes are amazing, and the rock is covered everywhere with colored lichen so bright it looks like someone painted it on with a giant highlighter!
Right before you hit the hairpin circuit, you can turn off towards Jack & Betty Jo Hildebrand's Pleasant Valley Ranch in Springville. A little farther West of the mountains, the roads run a bit straighter and the landscape is pure Americana gorgeous: a setting sun over 190 West is a real sight to see - and even better with one of the Hildebrand's sunset-colored organic Navel Oranges in your hand. Their family has been growing in the San Joaquin Valley for more than a century. Pleasant Valley Ranch oranges have won awards at the Tulare County Fair, the California State Fair, the New Orleans World Fair, and the Paris France World Exposition. We are proud to share them with our West Coast customers this week. The Hildebrands recently visited the FruitGuys with their hand juicer and treated us to a juice "happy hour," squeezing off a few fresh "rounds" for us. What a way to wind down the week! East Coast and Midwest customers will find fresh Sunburst Tangerines, Clementines, and Satsumas. As always, check out your regional mix here. And a special thanks to all our clients who generously donated their Thanksgiving week crates to local food banks and charities. If your office is closed or minimally staffed over the Christmas and New Year's week holidays, you can forward your fruit through our Donate-A-Crate program. Just contact FruitGuys customer service (1-877-FRUIT-ME) or info@fruitguys.com to donate - or postpone - your holiday week deliveries. And remember that your donation is tax deductible.
Enjoy and be fruitful!
