Tastes and Tunes for Office Heroes
Posted on January 26, 2009
I'm listening to jazz and thinking about superheroes. None of this is unusual by itself - jazz is undeniably cool and my lifelong love affair with comics means superheroes are often on my mind. But today I'm listening to jazz that's been written about superheroes. Talented New York City composer Kelly Fenton (pictured right) has recorded a suite of music based on Infinite Crisis, a mini-series published in 2005 by DC Comics as a sequel to the groundbreaking upheaval of 1985, Crisis on Infinite Earths. If anyone is even remotely as excited as I am, you can check it out at www.kellyfentonjazz.com. And dig the baritone sax on "Villains United, I: The Society & The Secret Six, II: Catman." Sounds like a real Hep Cat to me, Man.
Anyway, as I was saying, thinking about heroes gets me thinking about Superman, which inevitably gets me thinking about Kryptonite. In the 1960s, Kryptonite had become such a crucial super-plot-element the writers had invented several different colors of it, each with its own effect on the Man of Steel. And what else has several different colors, each with a unique taste effect? Why, the color-wheel of fruits and flavors in your FruitGuys crate this week! Let's compare a few, to see how would Superman react compared to you, our True Office Heroes!
Green - The Classic Kryptonite robs Superman of his strength and powers. Present in your FruitGuys crate this week in the form of D'Anjou and Concorde Pears, Granny Smith Apples, and Kiwis, antioxidant rich and fibertastic. The only thing these will rob you of is your late-afternoon slowdown at your desk!
Red - Unpredictable Kryptonite has turned Superman into a dragon, a non-powered giant, and an ant-headed humanoid among other random things over the years. Your red FruitGuys items are all predictably delicious, however: Blood Oranges (from Ronnie Cruz at Cruz Farm in Porterville, CA), Ruby Grapefruit, and even Red Navel Oranges for some customers. All are high in the Supervitamin, C, to help you battle cold and flu season.
Orange - Irrelevant Kryptonite can give superpowers to animals, but has no effect on Superman or humans. Enjoy plenty of Navel Oranges, Murcotts (from Friend’s Ranch in Ojai, CA), Minneolas, and Royal Mandarins to make Fido really, really jealous.
Remember, you can always check out your complete regional mix here.
Enjoy and be Fruitful!
