April Food's Day
Posted on April 06, 2009April 1, 1878: Approximately one year after Thomas Edison debuted his first major invention, the phonograph, public perception held no limits on his genius. So when The New York Graphic announced that Edison had invented a machine that would end world hunger by transforming soil directly into cereal, and water directly into wine, the story found plenty of believers. Newspapers throughout America reprinted the article, realizing too late it was a hoax. Oh - the slightly shallow and pained chuckle those 19th century tightly-corseted ladies must have had that morning while their handlebar-mustached men were busy snapping their suspenders in April Fool's frivolity before careening oversized front wheels of 7-foot-tall bicycles into ditches around the country. Thank goodness in the 21st century we can now count on the news to bring us only the facts. Some facts about Grapefruit and Kiwi Berries:
Grapefruit: Jack & Betty Jo Hildebrand's delicious Organic Grapefruits from Pleasant Valley Ranch in Springville, CA, are high in Vitamin C and can help with weight loss because of their fat-burning enzymes and low sodium (which helps flush out excess water retention). Grapefruit also contains salicylic acid, which helps dissolve inorganic calcium that can form in joints causing arthritis. Its juice can also be used as a natural external antiseptic. But be aware that grapefruit can interfere with certain medications including statin medications used to reduce cholesterol, Valium, and certain heart medications. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you are taking any prescription drugs. For more info, see: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=25#healthbenefits
Kiwi Berries: These little organic nutrient powerhouses come from Kiwi Korners Farm near Danville, PA. Kiwi Berries can have as much Vitamin C as five oranges, twice the Vitamin E of an avocado (but less than half the calories), and the same amount of Vitamin B6 as a serving of spinach! But if you are allergic to latex, or have kidney or gallbladder stones, you should avoid them. They contain oxalates, which can cause calcium crystallization, and the skin has compounds related to latex. And now, a brand-new taste sensation with no adverse side effects: the ORIN APPLE. The crisp-textured Orin apple has a sturdy yellow-green skin that resists bruising, and shares the parentage of Indo and Golden Delicious varieties. This seriously delicious and fragrant apple has a truly unique palette, leaving a taste akin to pineapple in your mouth. Orin was originally cultivated in Japan where it is customary to slice and share to commemorate special occasions.
