Guy Noir and the Grapefruit April 2, 2007

April had a knack for making my life complicated. So when April walked through my door on the First, I couldn’t help but feel like a fool. “Trick or Treat,” she said with a smile. It was all show and no tell.

“I’ve seen this before,” I said leaning back in my chair and kicking my feet up on the desk. I tipped my fedora down and took a bite of the apple I was rolling in my hand.
“I’ve got something for you,” she said.
“Go on,” I inquired.
“If the weather holds, I’ll bring Cherry in towards the end of my time,” April teased. I’d heard this one before. Sure, it had been a perfect winter in California for the upcoming cherry crop–sustained winter cold gives tree fruit strength–but there was still a long way to go until harvest. “We’ll see if you can keep the weather together,” I said skeptically. “What else have you got for me?”
April opened her handbag and looked around slowly. She pulled out a grapefruit. “I’ve got Ruby Grapefruits this week. And get this: grapefruits, which originated in the Caribbean in the eighteenth century, are a hybrid between the sweet orange and pummelo. They also have a flavonoid compound called Naringin in them that they say helps inhibit certain cancers. But here’s the skinny: it’s also taste bud primer. A palate cleanser. Like a fruit sorbet.”
“There’s something else,”she said, leaning across my desk. “It appears that some grapefruit compounds can interfere with the body’s metabolism of certain modern drugs. If you take medication check your prescriptions before eating the fruit or drinking the juice.”
“Good tip,”I said. “You ain’t bad kid.” April blushed and walked out like a lamb.
