Thanksgiving by the Numbers

I grew up on the East Coast where Thanksgiving always meant cold (usually snow) with smiling pilgrims shaking hands with turkeys lurking around every corner. Mayflower was more than just a moving company, and we wore tinfoil buckles on our Keds and black construction paper hats in elementary school plays. And even if we spend the holidays now in Arizona with sun and desert sand everywhere, someone still traces an outline of their hand and sticks feathers on it. When families get together year after year, the traditions invariably get passed down.

Usually Thanksgiving is about numbers: How many place settings? How many pounds is the turkey? How many calories? How many vegetarians are coming? Do we have enough salad and gluten-free snacks? What time is everyone getting here? etc. But the most important number for me is always pie—how many of them.

My mom makes the best pies. She learned from her mom. And a year doesn't go by without a Thanksgiving taste test to re-crown the Pie Queen. Apple, pumpkin, pecan, mincemeat, lemon meringue, just for starters. Mmmmmmmmm. One of the great Thanksgiving traditions in our family is to serve pie for breakfast the next morning. I remember my father explained to me once why it's so good: apples give you the vitamins and fiber, mom's fresh wheat crust hits the grain area of the food pyramid, a glass of milk or oat-milk for a little protein, not to mention American-style with melted cheddar cheese. What's not to love? There's a lot to be thankful for out in the world, as long as we make an effort to find it.
