Love the satisfying crunch of an apple and the sweet juicy flesh of a pear? Then you’re going to fall head over heels for the unique Crunchy Gold apple-pear from California’s family-run Kingsburg Orchards!
Crunchy Gold apple pears are a special type of Asian pear (aka Nashi)—they’re bright yellow with a smooth texture and thin skin, like that of an apple. A round shape and crisp white flesh gives Asian pears an apple-like appearance, but their flavor and taste are similar to that of a pear. And although this delectable fruit may be new to some palates, Asian pears originated around 3,000 years ago in China and have been cultivated on the West Coast since the Gold Rush era.
Kingsburg Orchards, developer of the Crunchy Gold apple pear, has a family farming tradition that goes back five generations. Today, it is the largest family-owned stone fruit farmer in the San Joaquin Valley.
Crunchy Gold apple pears ripen on the tree and are picked when ready to eat. This thin-skinned apple-pear should be enjoyed with its nutrient-rich peel. For a light, healthy snack, or as a lovely accompaniment to cheeses, salads, and a wide variety of other dishes, eat apple pears sliced or out of hand like an apple.
And at only around 80 calories per medium-sized fruit (and about 30% of the recommended daily value for fiber), what’s not to love?
Storage
Apple pears typically keep on the counter at room temperature for up to a week. Store them in the refrigerator for 2–3 weeks or so.
