Give Thanks & Cleanse Palate

Ah, Thanksgiving memories. Take for example that holiday in the mid-80’s when my dad was in the basement, sprawled flat on his stomach on the cold-concrete floor, with his hand in the sump-pump which had backed up from the strain of all the relatives visiting for the weekend. Or there was the time I brought my then-girlfriend, now wife, home for Thanksgiving to meet the family. After talking about how my grandfather had died on October 31st, a relative then said he didn’t know why but Halloween was his favorite day of the year. There was a general pause. Then, with a look of well-I-guess-I’ll-say-it, my wife commented, “Paging Doctor Freud.” I knew then and there that I wanted this woman to have my children.

Last year, after my kids put on a show of schoolyard chants that would put any double-dutch jump rope champion to shame – (“Bat-man, batman, I can do kar-a-te. Batman, batman, I can call my mom-may…”) the adults (or those who are adults in age but not in action) did their own schoolyard raps until all of us, kids and grown ups, were falling off our chairs trying to catch our breath from laughter and hold in all those great Thanksgiving pies.

With so much food, conversation, silliness and people, after Thanksgiving I always feel like I need a good palate cleanse. At this time of year I find it in farm-fresh citrus.
Winter is citrus season and all the specialty fruits are now coming out! Harvest Flyer Crates have two different Satsumas — the stem and leaf and the non-stem Satsumas are from two different farms and prove that, like wine, taste can vary from farm to farm. Also check out the sweet-as-natural-candy Clementines that will rock your mouth for hours after eating. Plus, it’s the first week of fresh grapefruit.

Enjoy and be fruitful!
