A Granola Cereal Bowl Worth Waking Up For

When you need to rev up your brain for a long work day, go for a high-fiber breakfast. It will focus your mind and, according to the Cleveland Clinic, help lower your cholesterol, which is great news for long-term heart health.

One of my favorite high-fiber breakfasts for spring is this granola cereal bowl topped off with fresh fruit. It gets a fiber boost from strawberries, oats, nuts, and seeds. Plus, it tastes delicious! And it’s healthier than a muffin or donut if you, like me, have a breakfast sweet tooth.

Cook’s Note

My go-to granola right now is Farmhand’s Choice from Early Bird, one of The FruitGuys’ snack partners. It’s salty-sweet and full of nutrient-dense add-ins, like pecans, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and coconut chips! If you get The FruitGuys’ Thoughtful Snack Box in your office, look for single-serving bags of Early Bird’s granola in your mix. Two 2-ounce bags are the perfect amount for this recipe.

If you don’t have Farmhand’s Choice, The FruitGuys’ Good Seed Granola is also delicious—or any granola will do! You can also swap in your favorite dairy or non-dairy milk for oat milk, and use any fruits, nuts, and seeds you like. I often sprinkle on hemp seeds and ground flax seeds, which are both great sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

FAQs

1. Do I need to use strawberries, or can I swap in a different fruit?

You can swap in any fruit you like! Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches, apricots, nectarines, plums, apples, and pears all work well in this recipe, and are full of fiber and other health benefits for your body and brain. I recommend topping your granola cereal bowl with whatever fruit is fresh and in season near you.

2. Which nuts and seeds should I use?

This depends on your personal preference and which nuts and seeds (if any) are already included in your granola of choice. I like to add hemp seeds and ground flax seeds to my bowls, but if you use a nut- and seed-free granola, then almonds, pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts, walnuts, and pecans are also good options. You can even stir in store-bought or homemade nut butter for a creamier bowl.

3. What’s a good substitute for oat milk?

If you’re dairy-free like me, soy, coconut, or almond milk will work well in this recipe. Dairy alternatives like whole milk and its lower-fat versions are also good options.

4. Can I add dried fruit to my granola cereal bowl?

Of course! Dried fruit is delicious and nutritious, and you can often find it in The FruitGuys’ Thoughtful Snack Boxes. Just keep in mind that it’s high in natural sugar and calories, so depending on your health goals, you might want to add it in moderation.
