Silly Old Pear

Bartlett Pear, known to his friends as Many-of-Two, or Two for short, was hanging on a tree at Jelich Ranch in Portola Valley, California, singing proudly to himself. He had invented this little song while doing his sugaring exercises in the morning sun:
“Up and down, up and down,
bobbing branch goes round and round.
Sun gives heat; birds say tweet.
Sweetness makes me good to eat.”

He chuckled to himself in the way that pears ripening on a tree like to and started to think of what Every fruit else was doing while waiting for Their picking. Sometimes the wind blew, or clouds marched in patchwork shadows across the orchard he had become accustomed to calling home, but today The Bees, which were not often taken to socializing idly, had been buzzing in the clover all morning talking with Skip, the caretaker of the 15-acre, 100-year-old ranch, who was expecting Something To Happen for something always happened. Well, it just happened that The FruitGuys truck pulled up and Skip plucked Two from his branch for a grand adventure.

Meanwhile, FruitGuys East Coast Fruit Buyer Benn Roe (“Is that me?” You said via email. “That is you,” said I, hoping that you don’t mind me talking about you in the third person. “I don’t mind,” said you as you sent me a smiling emoticon). Meanwhile, Benn pulled the FruitGuys truck up to Beechwood Orchards in Adams County, Pennsylvania, a fifth-generation family farm to find his old friends, Plum, Peach, and Nectarine. Said you: “Dave at Beechwood was very friendly and very informative but also terribly busy. He had about eight varieties of plums, and we had some trouble telling them apart. As for the names of the varieties of white nectarines and donut peaches he had to say: ‘I don’t know. I try one I like. I put seeds in the ground. They come up. I sell them.'” Benn tasted and tasted and thought and thought and then tasted again. He decided on some of this and some of that which you can all find listed with pictures and all on the website under the name of FruitGuys.

With great thanks for inspiration to Benn and A.A.Milne.
