So then this guy walks into a giant banana. . .March 20, 2006

It must have been the time I was eating my Alpha-Bits cereal and watching “Letter-Man” on The Electric Company, that 1970s post-Sesame Street PBS show with the superhero who pulls letters from his varsity sweater and spells words that save the day. Next thing I knew, my seven-year-old self was walking around the house with a tattered blue cape-blanket around my neck and a single-sized box of AlphaBits stuffed in my Snoopy swim trunks. “I’ll rip this P from my varsity sweater (dig, dig, in the box, cereal everywhere, I found the P!) and spell PLANT! I’d yell, leaving a trail of AlphaBits in a neat line on the soil of the potted fern on the deck. ‘And this is FLOOR! And this is TOILET! – Wow, the letters really do grow in water. And this is ABXZYMPTFGHLZ! In the toilet! And this an entire roll of toilet paper on top of ABXZYMPTFGHLZ in the toilet.”

Later, when my father asked me to spell PLUNGER and GO TO YOUR ROOM, I realized I needed to find another superhero. It wasn’t until 1998 when, after starting FruitGuys, I found a banana costume and realized the superhero dream was still strong inside of me after all those years. On that first alter-ego day in 1998, I stood on the corner of California and Montgomery Streets handing out bananas, telling people about The FruitGuys all while making people smile. Over fifty banana give-aways later, we’re coming to an office near you.

A Cameo for the Cameo: Our apple suppliers are often changing during the early months of spring. The supply of stored apples from the fall harvest is dwindling, and we now will begin to pull from other growers and regions with different varieties.
