In 2014 two enthusiastic teams from The FruitGuys South San Francisco office volunteered on consecutive Fridays at our local San Francisco-Marin Food Bank last month. Our groups helped pack more than 2,700 food boxes for seniors as part of the Food Bank’s Home-Delivered Groceries program, providing home delivery of healthy foods to low-income seniors. A total of 56,784 pounds of food was packed!
The volunteer event was arranged by The FruitGuys Activity Committee, an internal task force that organizes participation for FruitGuys employees in local GoodWorks events, health and wellness activities, and team-building exercises.
While San Francisco and Marin counties are thought of as being predominantly affluent communities, the Food Bank reports that one in four residents is unable to afford all the food they need. Over 100,000 meals’ worth of food is sorted, packaged, and delivered every day to help feed hungry children, families, adults, and seniors throughout San Francisco and Marin. Nearly a quarter of a million people are nourished annually through the Food Bank’s programs.
If you’re a San Francisco Bay Area resident who would like to help, please visit sfmfoodbank.org for more information. Residents of other areas can visit Feeding America’s Food Bank Locator, searchable by state or zip code, to find your nearest foodbank. There are many ways to volunteer or donate. No gift or effort is too small!
