The Ultimate Office Snack Box Guide

Whether you’re already a FruitGuys customer or just scoping out our selection of office snacks, you might have wondered how we choose the bars, bites, jerkies, and more that end up in our snack delivery boxes. How do we decide which brands make the cut? Are there rules? And what exactly comes in a FruitGuys snack box?

The short answer is that, yep, there are rules—and we’re very picky! In this guide to our office snacks, we’ll take you behind the scenes with FruitGuys Snack Category Manager (SCM) Daria Jackson to explain our snack selection process and what you’ll find in our snack boxes.

What’s In the Box

As SCM, Daria is responsible for sourcing snacks, designing new snack boxes, and more. Here’s her rundown of what’s included in each FruitGuys snack box.

“At the most basic level, each box features a rotating selection of snacks sourced from diverse companies that care about people and the planet,” Daria said. “When you open your box at your office, you’ll find a bunch of delicious snacks that your team can share and enjoy.”

Daria is one of the masterminds behind our Thoughtful Snack Box, our most popular box of office snacks. Here’s a more specific look at how its contents break down.

Variety of Options

We stock our boxes with snacks in five categories: bars and bites, crunchy, veggie, naturally sweet, jerky and cured meats, and fruit, nuts, and seeds. We also aim to include vegan, gluten-free, high-protein, and allergy-friendly options in our boxes whenever possible to make sure there’s something for every worker.

Rotating Selection

Most of our customers have recurring deliveries, meaning they get a new box of office snacks delivered to their break room every day, week, or month. To keep their employees’ taste buds on their toes, we rotate our snack selection weekly to create different mixes.

Snack(s) of the Month

Every month, we choose a snack (or two, or three!) to highlight as our Snack of the Month. For one month only, FruitGuys snackers can count on seeing that snack in all of their boxes. We might send out mushroom jerky for World Vegan Month, gluten-free pumpkin spice cookies in Spooky Season, or popcorn from a Black-owned brand to celebrate Juneteenth.

“We use our Snacks of the Month to celebrate holidays, heritage months, and the diversity of our suppliers,” Daria said. “They give our customers something fun and seasonal to look forward to in their boxes, and a lot of companies also order these snacks by the case for team events and celebrations.”

Snack Education

At least once a month, we add extra information about our snacks to our snack boxes. That might mean slipping in a note about a snack brand founder’s story, information about a brand-new snack in the box, or details on that month’s Snack of the Month and why we chose it.

Now that you know the basic things inside each of our snack boxes, let’s talk about how we choose the individual brands and snacks in our selection.

How We Choose Our Office Snacks

Daria is very careful about the snacks that she chooses for our Thoughtful Snack, Fruit & Snacks, and Snack Lovers boxes. She evaluates each snack provider based on a specific set of criteria, including everything from the brand’s ethics to the number of ounces and servings in its snack packages.

Here’s a quick look at our top priorities when sourcing new office snacks. A snack vendor needs to meet most of these criteria for us to consider a partnership.

1. Mission-minded

We prioritize sourcing snacks from companies that share our commitment to social and environmental responsibility. These companies typically donate, volunteer, or otherwise give back to the planet or their community.

2. Owned by a member of a marginalized community (woman, AAPI, Black, Latinx, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, or immigrant)

Our snack selection reflects and celebrates a diversity of tastes and cultures. Some of our snack vendors have ownership certifications (e.g. Certified Women’s Business Enterprise, Certified Minority Business Enterprise), while others are working toward certification. We don’t require our vendors to be certified, however, because certifications can be cost-prohibitive for many businesses.

3. Family-owned

We’re proud to partner with family-owned businesses like ours. We’ve found these companies prioritize quality (their product is tied to their family name, after all!) and are deeply invested in their workers, customers, and communities.

4. Owned and/or Sourced Locally

We support local businesses near our regional hubs whose work contributes to strong, unique, local economies. Without local businesses, our communities wouldn’t truly feel like home.

5. Delicious Taste

Each snack we add to our boxes is thoroughly taste-tested by our team members. If we don’t love to eat it, we won’t send it!

6. Unique Snack Experience

We’re constantly exploring new flavors, textures, and concepts to surprise and delight our customers. Our boxes include both beloved local brands and brands you’ve likely never seen in grocery stores.

7. Simple, Whole-food Ingredients

We believe in transparency at every step of the supply chain, and we source office snacks that align with our values. That means skipping snacks with potentially problematic ingredients like corn syrup (including high fructose corn syrup), sugar alcohols, trans fats, added hormones, artificial nitrates, and more.

8. Small Business

We support small businesses with 500 or fewer employees because they keep the marketplace diverse and competitive. We love being part of their journeys and helping them grow.

These eight things are our top priorities, but they’re not the only things that we look for in our snacks. Daria also considers other factors like package size, price, and the supply of snacks available.

“Sometimes it takes me months or even years to officially partner with a new snack brand,” Daria said. “That might sound like a long time, but it’s worth it to me because by the end of it, I know that we’re forming a really high-quality partnership that aligns with our values and the values of our customers.”
