Farm-Fit is a nationwide initiative crafted by The FruitGuys and Aramark with the aim of enabling small, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color)-owned farms to supply their produce to Aramark accounts. By backing BIPOC farmers, Aramark customers gain access to fresh, locally sourced produce and contribute to fostering resilience and equity within regional supply chains.
Why Support BIPOC-Owned Farms?
According to the 2022 Census of Agriculture, 95 percent of farmers are white and 75 percent of farmers make less than $50,000 per year in revenue. Many Black farmers are also aging out of the workforce: The average age of a Black farmer is 60.8 years old. The Farm-Fit program is helping change the narrative for these underserved farming communities.
The majority of the farms that Farm-Fit works with are either certified organic or follow organic farming practices, with an emphasis on improving soil health, promoting biodiversity on the farm, and more.
Pilot Program Success Story: UCI Dining Services
Our journey began with a visionary partnership with UCI Dining Services in 2021. Collaborating with Leo Diaz of Bonita Farms (a.k.a. La Finca Bonita), we established a standing order tailored to the chef’s menu needs. The FruitGuys facilitated seamless invoicing and customer account management. Meanwhile, Leo delivered produce directly to the university in reusable crates, reducing waste and supporting sustainability efforts.
Join The Movement
Buoyed by the success of our pilot, we are thrilled to announce plans for national expansion in 2024. Stay tuned as we continue to champion diversity, sustainability, and community empowerment through Farm-Fit.
Together, we can cultivate a future where every farmer thrives, every plate is nourished, and every community flourishes. Join us in supporting Farm-Fit and make a meaningful impact today.
