As part of our Fruitful Visits series, we tour Frecon Farms of Southeastern Pennsylvania, which is as rich in history and community as it is in apples and stone fruits. At the farm, family and sustainability are core values. Peaches, nectarines, plums, pears, apricots, cherries, blueberries, and 23 different types of apples are grown and cared for on this 120-acre farm. Along with flourishing crops, there is a family market, bakery, and cidery! Steve Frecon, one of the co-owners of the farm, mentions the abundance of native pollinators that thrive in their “buffer zones” and play a crucial part in a good harvest. They use grant money to continue to support these “buffer zones” in order to have plants that native pollinators live in and work around. This farm also takes a focus not just on environmental sustainability, but also in economic sustainability. Frecon Farms offers educational opportunities to show others what is so great about their farming practices. They do this by giving farm tours to students in hopes to inspire young people to eat more fruit and support local and sustainable farms.
