We’re chomping at the bits for Gravenstein apples to arrive!
Started in 1975, Devoto Gardens & Orchards in Sonoma, CA, is home to over 90 varieties of apples, but perhaps the most popular is the Gravenstein. Farmer Stan Devoto discusses this historic apple and how it was first planted on the coast of CA in the early 19th century. Gravenstein taste and texture changes throughout the harvest season as in early harvest it’s tart, green, and juicy. By the second week of harvest, the apple has more sugar and loses astringency, making it good for eating and apple sauce. In the third week of harvest, it becomes a “dessert apple,” as it has immense flavor and is great for making hard cider. Farmer Stan hopes that when you bite into one of his apples that it is ripe, crisp, and juicy!
