Spooky Fruits for Your Office’s Halloween Fruit Tray

It’s almost Halloween, which in my house means last-minute costume preparations and grocery store runs for lots and lots of candy. At the office, it also means it’s time for a Halloween fruit tray. Fruit isn’t usually top of the Halloween shopping list (other than pumpkins), but this is actually a great time to celebrate fruits that, to many of us in the US, can look a little spooky and out of this world.

Frightfully Fun Fruits for Your Halloween Fruit Tray

My favorite Halloween fruits are ones that are striking both inside and out‚ like Kiwano melons, rambutans, passion fruits, and Buddha’s hands.

Kiwano Melons

Whole and halved horn fruit

The Kiwano melon is egg-shaped with bright orange and yellow skin that’s covered in spikes. Originally grown in Africa, it’s related to cucumbers and melons. You can see the resemblance when you cut it open to reveal the seedy, pulpy (some might call it slimy) green fruit inside. The contrast is startling and very Halloween-themed, but Kiwano melons aren’t just for displaying on a Halloween fruit tray. You can also scoop out the insides with a spoon for a snack. The flavor is mild but unique. When I had one this week, I thought it tasted cucumber-y and limey at the same time.

Rambutans

Rambutans, whole and halved

From horned melons, we move on to a hairy fruit: the rambutan! At first glance, you might not be sure how to eat this unique-looking guy, but it’s easier than it looks. Just peel off the hairy shell to reach the chewy, white, lychee-ish fruit hiding inside. There’s a seed in the middle of the white flesh, which you should skip. I really enjoy rambutans; they can be quite sweet with an almost gummy bear-like texture that’s really enjoyable.

Passion Fruits

Finally, there’s passion fruit. This fruit’s purple color and wrinkled skin (which shrivels when it’s ready to eat) blend right in with Halloween decor, but slice one open, and you’ll find your own natural witch’s brew. The heart of the passion fruit is full of juicy yellow pulp with black seeds, and you can drink it right from the shell.

Buddha’s Hands

Buddha's hand whole

There’s one more truly unique fruit that I have to mention because it seems almost made for the holiday, and that’s the Buddha’s hand. It truly looks like a hand or a tiny monster! There isn’t really any fruit to eat or juice to drink from this citrus, but its zest and aroma make it special. When you move the fruit’s “fingers” or scrape away its rind, it gives off a lovely, bright lemon smell that will freshen up any room.

Still Want More Spooky Fruit Ideas?

Last week, I got the opportunity to show off my favorite Halloween treats for the office during a visit to KTLA 5 News in Los Angeles. You can watch the video of my interview below for even more ideas for your spooky fruit platter, from dragon fruits to finger limes.
