I’m on a family vacation when I get the news, and my stomach sinks: John Kolling of Appleseed Farms, one of our farm partners, doesn’t have any Gravenstein apples to sell us this year. “John said they went to pick our order, but weren’t able to get much, and a lot of the apples they were getting were tiny,” Miguel, one
If you’re a little freaked out by the stomach bug news that’s been going around, I don’t blame you. It’s a taste that only comes around for a few weeks each year—and it’s almost here again. 20 Years of Gravenstein Apples If you’ve never heard of them,
On April 22, Steve Frecon of Frecon Farms in Boyertown, Pennsylvania, woke up to a disaster. Overnight, the temperature had dropped to as low as 20 degrees F in some parts of his orchard. That cold snap was the second one in three weeks. It froze the flowers and young fruits on his peach, plum, apple, and cherry trees—destroying at
I’ve written and deleted the opening paragraph of this blog more times than I’d like to admit. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and while I want to talk about it, I’m not sure how. I’m not a counselor or a psychologist, so am I really qualified to talk to you about mental health at work? I’m not, but one
Have you ever picked up a round orange-colored fruit and wondered, “Is this an orange or a mandarin? Or wait … maybe a tangerine? September brings an avalanche of fruit to Beechwood Orchards in Biglerville, Pennsylvania. For a few glorious and stressful weeks, Melissa Allen and her family are busy as bees picking peaches, apples, and Asian pears all at once. They sell their fruit at farmers’ markets and to The FruitGuys for its East Coast corporate fruit deliveries to offices like yours. “We’re
As a teenager, I went to sailing camp on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. It was a small part of a much larger sleepaway camp. In our little group, there were no more than 16 campers at a time. We all slept in one building—girls on the top floor, boys below—and we sailed on the bay every day. The problem

While the symmetry isn’t exact—in North America, we receive roughly eight more
