What’s Fresh? Spring Seasonal Fruits from Coast to Coast

Spring is a funny season in the fruit world. To me, it feels like the appetizer (or, if we’re being fancy, the amuse-bouche) before a lovely meal. It’s delicious and whets our appetite, but it’s not the main course—that’s summer fruit! Still, I love the warm weather and seeing the flowers and trees bloom. And our farm partners are picking some delicious spring seasonal fruits for our office fruit boxes right now as anticipation builds for the summer harvest.

Our farmer friends are harvesting the last Ojai Pixie tangerines and other late-season citrus fruits right now for our fruit boxes across the US. Meanwhile, berries are ramping up in California and will appear soon in other parts of the country. Spring and summer fruits arrive on the West Coast first, then move east as the growing season continues. Here’s what you can expect to see in your region’s boxes as that shift begins.
West Coast: Cherries Are Here, Plus Peaches On the Horizon
On top of the late-season citrus and berries that I mentioned, we’re also seeing the first California stone fruit (any fruit with a pit, like peaches, nectarines, apricots, and plums) already! Last year, we didn’t get stone fruit on the West Coast until mid-May. But this year, the harvest is starting earlier. We’re adding California-grown cherries from The Flavor Tree Fruit Company to our fruit mixes this week for the first time this season. They’re looking beautiful and tasting sweet. We’ve heard from our growers that peaches, nectarines, and apricots are hitting the market early, too, so keep an eye out for those in your mixes in the coming weeks.

Midwest: Local Fujis, Plus Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Apricots
In the Midwest, local stone fruit doesn’t typically start until June or July. We’re looking forward to Michigan apricots from Mick Klüg Farms to kick off the season. For now, we still have local Fuji apples from Lehman’s Orchard in some of our Chicago-area office fruit deliveries.
East Coast: Farm Apples, Plus Summer Stone Fruit Coming Soon
We’re working on sourcing local East Coast cherries for our deliveries to Philadelphia, New York, and beyond, which could arrive as early as May. In late June, we’re excited for yellow peaches to appear and truly start the stone fruit parade. A surprise cold snap hit the East Coast this week, and our farmers are watching out to see how the fruit will fare with the late-season cold weather. We’ll keep you posted as they learn more. In the meantime, we’re continuing to feature local Pennsylvania apples from Frecon Farms in our mixes and expect to have them through May.

Like any good appetizer, spring builds excitement and leaves us wanting more. Our amuse-bouche of spring seasonal fruits like Pixies, strawberries, and cherries is doing just that! I can’t wait to bite into what’s coming off the trees next.
